Peres retired from public office in 2014 after serving seven terms as president of Israel. He was also minister of defense and prime minister.

In 1994 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
