Sergei Magnitsky died in a Russian prison in 2009.

After uncovering what he said was massive tax fraud by Russian kleptocrats, Magnitsky was arrested and tried on charges of tax evasion. He died in prison.

The U.S. Congress passed a law in 2012 freezing the assets of 18 Russian officials connected to Magnitsky's prosecution and death. Russian President Vladimir Putin responded by suspending the adoption of Russian children by American families.
