National Security Council

The National Security Council is the president's main forum for consideration of security and foreign policy issues. It is chaired by the president. Other attendees have traditionally included the vice president; the secretaries of State, Treasury and Defense; and the assistant to the president for national security affairs. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has served as the military adviser and the director of national intelligence as the intelligence adviser.

After taking office in 2017, President Trump reorganized the council's principals committee to include his top political adviser, Steve Bannon. Trump also decreased the participation of the director of national intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
