Muckety downExxon's influence took a definite upturn when its CEO, Rex Tillerson, was named secretary of state in 2017. The company's reputation was tarnished less than six months later, when Treasury fined it $2 million for violating Russian sanctions in 2014, when Tillerson was at the helm.

After the Supreme Court ordered the breakup of Standard Oil in 1911, the largest of the "baby Standards" was Standard Oil of New Jersey. The new company used the Esso, Enco and Humble Oil brands before becoming Exxon in 1973.
