The special Illinois House panel investigating Gov. Rod Blagojevich issued a draft report today recommending impeachment, putting lawmakers on a path toward removing the two-term Democrat from office, reports Chicago Breaking News.

The Obamas were turned away from Blair House because former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, a key Iraq ally, was booked for Jan. 12, reports the Washington Post.

Chris Matthews, the host of the MSNBC program “Hardball,” told his staff Wednesday night that he would not run for the Senate in 2010 from Pennsylvania, the New York Times reports.

Mark E. Rey, the former timber lobbyist who heads the U.S. Forest Service, had signaled his intention to make a rule change that would help a developer convert forests into housing subdivisions. The shift, to be made before Barack Obama became president, had huge implications for Montana, where Plum Creek Timber Company could have paved as many as 900 miles of roads through Forest Service land, according to the Washington Post. Plum Creek announced yesterday it was dropping the road-use request.
